UNICEF, CAF To Promote Education At Ghana 2008

Confederation
of African Football, CAF and UNICEF say they plan to
use the power of football during the 2008 Africa Cup
of Nations, scheduled for Ghana, to promote the
importance of education for children in Africa.
The partnership was announced in Accra, venue of the
draw for the competition.
“In Africa, more than 40 million children do not go
to school, especially girls…Promoting education as
well as achieving the Millennium Development Goals
is a core priority for UNICEF and its new partner
CAF,”
a statement said.
Proposed Projects
The statement explained that before and during the
CAN 2008 tournament, UNICEF would work with official
sponsors of CAN to raise awareness, promote key
messages and to raise funds for education.
“Every country participating in CAN is to benefit
from a share of the money raised by UNICEF for
relevant work in education. This includes improving
school facilities, such as buildings and sanitation,
standards of teaching, curricular and supplies as
well as ensuring that more children attend school
and stay for longer,”
the statement said.
“In the build-up to the World Cup in South Africa
2010, we look forward to laying the foundation for a
lasting relationship between UNICEF and football in
Africa,”
the statement added.
UNICEF collaborates with many footballers around the
world such as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors Marcel
Desailly and Nwankwo Kanu and Stephen Appiah.
