Reforms Trafficking Law
The Australian government has rolled
out fresh measures to improve support for victims of
trafficking.
Under the changes, a support
programme for victims of trafficking will be
extended from 30 to 45 days.
Temporary visas will also be
abolished for those under a witness protection
programme, reducing the process for obtaining a
permanent visa by two years.
Speaking at the country's National
Roundtable on People Trafficking in Canberra,
Immigration Minister Chris Evans said the changes
were designed to provide victims and their immediate
family members with greater certainty about their
immigration status.
Sex Discrimination Commissioner,
Elizabeth Broderick, said it was a welcome relief
for victims, who were often burdened with an
uncertain visa status as well as the trauma they had
suffered.
