Team For 2011 Hosting
Stanley Madu, Lagos
The
governing council of FIBA Africa has not named a host country
for the 2011 Afrobasket for Men as previously planned, but the
continental basketball body has set up an inspection committee
to visit the contending countries within this first quarter.
At a central board meeting held in Cairo, Egypt last weekend,
the body chose a team to inspect facilities on ground, after
which their decision will be based on findings.
Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Madagascar are bidding to host the 2011
championship.
Abuja, Lagos and Kaduna are the key centres for Nigeria for the
2001 biggest basketball championship on the African continent.
The FIBA Africa inspection team will be led by the Secretary
General, Dr. Alphonse Bile of Ivory Coast.
Nigeria is the only African basketball nation that is yet to
host or win the championship.
Egypt and Senegal have played as host at least twice each while
Angola has also hosted twice within 10 years.
Nigeria stepped down for Libya as host for the 2009 edition won
by Angola.
Mali, already confirmed as host of the women’s edition for 2011
also made presentations in Cairo on her level of preparations to
host the event.
