Lawmakers Committed To
Nigeria’s Problems - Speaker
Lateefat Afegbua, Abuja
The
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Dimeji Bankole, has
expressed the commitment of his colleagues in the lower house to
address the problems confronting Nigeria.
He re-stated this commitment while receiving a delegation of the
Coalition of Democrats for Electoral Reforms, led by Senator
Bola Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State.
He blamed past leaders for the flawed electoral process, saying
the issue of electoral reforms is not one for debate on the
pages of newspapers, but for the domain of policy makers who
have the capability to effect the desired change.
Senator Bola Tinubu had expressed concern over the electoral
process and warned of imminent violence that could result from
the manipulation of the forthcoming Year 2011 general election.
He also warned persons who may have plans to disrupt the votes
that a re-occurrence of violence, as in past elections, would be
tackled headlong.
Constitution Review
Meanwhile, the Senate ad-hoc committee on the Review of the
Constitution has concluded its three-day national public hearing
on the proposed alterations to the provisions of the 1999
constitution.
The ad-hoc committee obtained oral and written memoranda from
Nigerians including former Heads of State, politicians and civil
society groups.
