NIGERIA TO FIND ALTERNATIVE
SOURCES OF POWER
The
Director-General National Energy Commission, Professor Abubakar
Sambo, has stressed the need to diversify Nigeria's energy
sources in order to enhance the supply of electricity to
Nigerians.
Professor Sambo made the
suggestion in Kano, Northern Nigeria at a national workshop on
the use of Jatropha tree as an alternative source of energy.
Sambo said the measure would help
to enhance Nigeria's energy security and in the establishment of
a sustainable energy supply system for the country.
The Director General said that
the total consumption of conventional energy sources such as
crude oil, natural gas, coal and hydropower, in Nigeria, had
grown at an average rate of nine point eight per cent per annum
in the last ten years.
The Energy Commission boss said
the use of the multi-purpose Jatropha tree, whose seeds, could
be processed into bio-diesel could also be used to check
desertification.
The workshop was organised to
sensitise and create awareness on the use of the plant to
produce bio-diesel and other economic products for economic
empowerment.
