NIGERIAN PRESIDENT ADVOCATES FOR
NEW SECURITY NETWORK
Nigerian
President, Umaru Yar’Adua has called for effective global
networking by intelligence and Security Services in West Africa,
to stem the rising wave of International terrorism.
President Yar’Adua made the call
in a message to the summit of heads of Intelligence and Security
Services of West Africa which opened in Abuja, Nigeria’s
capital.
The first ever regional summit of
Heads of Intelligence and Security Services of West Africa is
under the auspices of the Committee of Intelligence and Services
of Africa.
The summit aims at offering
regional perspective that would bring the benefit of shared
neighbourhood experience to bear on the Management of
Intelligence.
President Yar’Adua asked the
summit to recognize the fact that the geo-ethnic mix of the
West Africa region and its demographic disposition means that
security of one nation was the security of all.
The President said there was
urgent need for effective information sharing to check security
threat to the region. He urged Intelligence Chiefs to ensure
that their proposals have practical relevance to realities in
each member country, taking into consideration the political
situation, developmental needs and social economic aspirations.
In his speech, the Director
General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Emmanuel
Imohe said the coming together of intelligence and security
services in West Africa was to provide a platform for
articulation of peculiar security threat with a view to finding
solutions to them.
