Gonvernment Will End Anti-Labour Policies- Yar’Adua
The
Nigerian President, Alhaji Umaru Yar’Adua has restated his
administration’s commitment to ending anti-labour practices in
the country.
Yar’Adua, at the national May Day
rally in Abuja, the nation’s capital, urged workers in both the
private and public sectors to repose faith in his policies.
He paid tributes to Nigerian
workers, saying they had made significant sacrifices for the
stability and progress of the country.
The President was represented at
the rally organised by the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade
Union Congress by the Minister of Labour, Dr. Hassan Lawal.
He spoke on “Making Nigeria Work
for the People,” the theme of this year’s event.
Yar’Adua also observed that the
nation’s dream of becoming one of the 20 most developed
economies by 2020 was hinged on the cooperation of workers.
He described the theme of the
event as a response to the development challenges facing the
country.
The President said, “As
partners in progress, these development challenges are staring
us in the face and they include, but not limited to, laying a
foundation for the sustainable poverty reduction and employment
generation”.
He urged workers to ensure that
this year‘s celebration assumed a new dimension by laying the
basis for the emergence of a new Nigerian worker ”who values
hard work and realises that we can only make Nigeria work by
being diligent and patritic.”
