Philippines Becomes Refugee Stop-Over
The
Philippines has agreed to provide temporary asylum
for endangered refugees before they reach their
final resettlement destination.
A reunion last week between the Philippine
Government, the United Nations High Commissioner for
Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization
for Migration established the south-east Asian
archipelago as a transit country.
The only other nation in the world that also
performs that function is Romania.
According to the UNHCR, mainly Asian refugees should
seek shelter in the Philippines, although it
welcomes people from all over the globe.
EU’s Offers
Meanwhile, the European Union is
expected to propose a new refugee scheme to allow in
more citizens escaping conflict and extreme poverty,
in order to deter illegal immigration.
