Moslems Celebrate
As
Moslems in Nigeria join the global celebration of Eid El Kabir,
Vice President Goodluck Jonathan in a message, says one of the
greatest challenges in Nigeria is the willingness to sacrifice.
The Vice President Jonathan told Moslem brothers and sisters
that the significance of the festival was obedience and
willingness of sacrifice to Almighty Allah, as exemplified in
the story of Prophet Ibrahim.
‘Worthy Virtues’
Vice President Jonathan said the significance of Prophet
Ibrahim’s life was all the more potent, given his humble
beginning and his attainment of greatness simply through
obedience to Allah.
The Vice president also said that the present government has
embarked on a thorough reform process, directed by the seven
point agenda, towards achieving the vision 20-2020.
According to him, the government has chosen the rigorous route
of a strict adherence to the rule of law in place of
arbitrariness and consensus building instead of an iron fist.
Across the country
In his message, Senate President, David Mark asked Moslems
to imbibe the spirit of peace, sacrifice, love, tolerance and
mutual co-existence.
Senator Mark stressed the need for Nigerians to be their
brother’s keeper no matter the odds, pointing out that the
festive season calls for forgiveness and love for one another.
He called on Moslems to be guided by the teachings of Holy
Prophet Mohammed which preaches love, peace, sacrifice, piety
and mutual respect.
Nation’s tasks
The Nigerian Senate President promised that the Senate would
pass the Year 2010 budget soon and fast track bills that would
facilitate the delivery of dividends of democracy.
Senator Mark noted the lapses in the implementation of the
previous Appropriation Acts, saying that the lawmakers are
guided by the experiences of the past to safeguard faithful
budget implementation.
He re-affirmed the resolve of the Senate to uphold the sanctity
of the 1999 Constitution as the template for good governance and
sustenance of democracy.
Eastern Nigeria
In his Sallah message to Moslem faithful in Anambra State, south
eastern Nigeria, Governor Peter Obi congratulated them and
reminded them of the spiritual message of the solemn feast.
Governor Obi said that the successful conclusion of the annual
Hajj, which culminates in Sallah festivity, is an apt reminder
that human society must be imbued with values that would reflect
the brilliance of God.
He said that the Sallah celebration underscored love,
friendship, brotherliness, charity and generosity, among other
values.
In Imo state
Governor Ikedi Ohakim of Imo State commended Moslems in the
state for their peaceful disposition and industry which he said
had enhanced the development of the state.
In his Eld-El-Kabir Goodwill message, Governor Ohakim urged
Moslems to use the period to reflect on the various challenges
facing the nation, saying that it takes the efforts of all
achieve meaningful development of any nation.
’’This is a time for all of us to have a sober reflection and
think of what we can do for Nigeria, and not what Nigeria can do
for us,” he said.
Governor Ohakim assured all Moslems resident in Imo state of
adequate security of lives and property.
