US Warns Pakistan On
Misuse Of Aids
The
US government warns it will suspend official aid to Pakistan if
there is any misuse of its latest aid pledge.
President Barack Obama has proposed a 7.5 billion US dollar
package of non-military aid.
Officials from the Obama administration issued a report saying
the money would be spent on water, agriculture and electricity
projects.
The leaked report also laid out a strategy to prevent corruption
and to stop the money falling into the hands of extremists. Most
of the aid will be channelled via national and provincial
government in Pakistan as well as domestic groups.
This represents a shift from previous practice of relying on
US-based humanitarian organisations and contractors.
The report stated that a bilateral agreement between the US and
Pakistan must be in place to provide maximum accountability and
oversight.
