Zimbabwe’s Opposition Ends Boycott Of
Unity Government
Zimbabwe's
Prime Minister, Morgan Tsvangirai has called off a boycott of parliament by
opposition members in President Robert Mugabe’s government. The boycott had
weakened the fragile unity government for three weeks.
The decision to end the boycott was reached after talks at an emergency regional
summit in the Mozambican capital, Maputo, to break the impasse in the
power-sharing ties.
The summit, attended by several southern African leaders, had resolved that the
three main political parties would meet within the next fifteen days to decide
how outstanding issues stalling the unity pact can be settled.
The summit's final communiqué urged the Zimbabwean government and opposition
parties to hold talks that would include all outstanding issues related to the
implementation of the unity pact.
The feuding parties were given a time frame of thirty days to conclude all the
outstanding issues.
