Mothers tasked on proper breastfeeding of babies
Abiodun Ozurumba, Enugu
Mothers around the world have been urged to ensure that they breastfeed their babies for at least six months, as it will go a long way to protect the babies from diseases.
The call was made at a one-day seminar on breastfeeding for female journalists in Enugu State organised by the United Nations Children's fund (UNICEF) under the aegis of Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Enugu chapter.
The seminar which was in commensuration of the breastfeeding week is usually observed worldwide from August 1 to 7 each year by UNICEF.
At the occasion, the deputy representative of the UNICEF office field A, Enugu state, Mr. Sylvester Igbinedion, noted that the seminar became important and essential, bearing in mind the theme of this year, which is “Talk The Talk” 3D communication.
Sensitising women
Mr Igbinedion called on journalists and other stakeholders to make this a reality by disseminating the message and helping to encourage mothers to breastfeed their children up till six months.
In his lecture entitled, “Breastfeeding as a right’s issue”, Dr. Nnamdi Onyire, pointed out that it is the right of the baby to be breastfed by the mother.
Dr. Onyire called on mothers to breastfeed their babies as it will go a long way to protect them from diseases.
Meanwhile, in her remarks, the NAWOJ Vice President, Zone C, Mrs Ngozi Ihekere, commended UNICEF for organising the seminar, pointing out that the seminar would help sensitize women on breastfeeding issues and was as well a veritable means for journalists to achieve such sensitization.
Mrs Ngozi Ihekere, also appealed to members of NAWOJ in the state to use their media to strengthen and disseminate the message, especially to the grass root.
She said that it should be an integral message of members of NAWOJ during this year’s August women conference.
Also speaking at the occasion, the chairperson Enugu State chapter of NAWOJ, Mrs Chieso Aninwagwa, commended all the stakeholders towards the success of the program.
Other speakers at the program include, Dr Chika Ndiokwelu, Deputy Director/HOD dept. of Nutrition & pediatrics, Mrs Chinelo Okpala among others.
