Using Vehicle particulars to fight crimes

Nigeria's new drivers licence and plate numbers are now to be used for checking and curtailing criminalmactivities in the country.

The vehicle particulars must have the biometrics of the motorist while the driver's licence has been manufactured to meet up with international standards, requirements and best practices.

This was revealed by Mr Nseobong Akpabio, the Head of Public Education,Federal Road Safety Corps in an interview with Voice of Nigeria.

"The system capture the individual biometric and will be stored and used at any given time, including finger prints," he said.

Mr Akpabio said security equipments were being installed in the country to help check over speeding, broken down vehicles, including robbery cases.

Car bombing

Meanwhile, the Road Safety Commission has said that Nigerian motorists have up to September next year to change their plate numbers for the new ones.

In Nigeria, bombers now use cars as their means of carrying out terrorist acts.

The United Nations and the police Headquarters were bombed using cars and where the plate numbers werte found, tracing the owners have been a problem.

Positive development

The Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan at the launch of the new National Vehicle plate numbers and Drivers licence was optimistic that it would help curb criminal acts and terrorism.

Meanwhile, the corps marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Osita Chidoka has launched the Nigerian chapter of the United Nations Decade of Action on Road Safety.

He expressed concern over cases of deaths and destruction of properties in accidents and expressed hope that this measure would help in the fight to reduce accidents on Nigerian roads.
