The United Nations Representative in Nigeria, Mr Dauda Toare, says they would want to see justice done on any perpetrator or perpetrators of the August 26 attack on UN building in Abuja.

Mr Toare, who is the world body’s Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, said they were still awaiting official report and details of any arrests from the Nigerian authorities.

‘’Indeed we demand that there is no impunity; that the lives of those innocent people are not left just to die. This is what we demand, it is international justice, that’s what we are talking about.’’ He however noted the various security measures being put in place by the Nigerian government.

Victims Evacuated

The UN Resident Coordinator further stated that they had evacuated a total of fourteen victims to South Africa adding that all evacuations had been done, and everybody who medically needed to be evacuated had been evacuated.

‘’Yesterday we spent a good part of the afternoon visiting the injured people in hospitals with the Minister of the FCT and other officials, and all along, even those who are not in life threatening situations, I have heard them being offered by the authorities, that if there is anything that cannot be treated internally, do let us know so that we can support… The National Hospital has done a terrific job, none of the people that have been admitted there has had their condition deteriorated; to the contrary, their conditions have improved tremendously for most of them.’’

The UN delegation to Nigeria expressed gratitude to God that there were no Children on the day of the attack and none of the staff who keep their children in the Crèche in the building brought them that day.

‘in this trying time.’

But UNICEF Country Representative, Saomi Sakai told journalists that they lost staff who workede to provide information to the Nigerian government about the health of the children in the country.

‘’we have colleagues who had been working on nutrition so that small children who are facing some malnutrition, may be, because of disease, that they get the therapy they need.

The other people that we are mourning are people who worked with statistics office of this country, to make sure that the country has the best information about what is happening to children and what programme should do in order to improve that situation.

These are the kind of people that we lost.’’ Final statistics of the dead and injured from the UN now show that 21 people died; twelve UN Staff and nine non UN Staff.

31 others were injured out of which fourteen were evacuated abroad.

The team has put up support programme for the families of the deceased to assist them ‘in this trying time.’
