UCH establishes e-laboratory
The University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, the capital Oyo State in south west Nigeria has established an e-laboratory for the use of doctors and other medical staff.
This was announced by the UCH Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof. Temitope Alonge while declaring open the Annual National Scientific Conference of the Graduate Nurses Association of Nigeria (GNAN), Oyo State chapter.
He said the e-laboratory would enable doctors perform operations and other duties without carrying about x-ray films.
He also added that nurses in the hospital would be trained to acquire ICT techniques in order to assist the doctors in using the new electronic gadget.
Advice
Alonge advised nurses in the country to shun semantics and engage in what he called “transitional research.''
He also advised nurses to “endeavour to develop a large heart in the performance of your duties because you know the patients more than the doctors.''
Alonge commended GNAN “for doing more in order to improve the nursing profession in Nigeria.''
Appeal
The National President of the association, Alhaji Basiru Akande appealed to health professionals to come together in order to nip in the bud any cankerworm in the profession.
He said, “Let the laws guiding the establishment of private health institutions be operational. Those in public service in particular have a lot to offer in this circumstance.’’
The Oyo State Chairman of GNAN, Mrs Taiwo Otufale, said earlier in her address of welcome that the theme of the conference, `Improving the Image of Nursing through Education and Quality Care,’ was chosen to re-awaken nurses to their role in the health sector.
She said, ”Quality care cannot be given without a good knowledge of the sciences and arts or without a good foundation. That is why the association needs to wage a war to checkmate the activities of quack nurses. Quackery does not only mar but it dents and distorts the image of nurses and nursing in general.’’
