South East governors commit to payment of minimum wage

The governors of Nigerias South East geo-political zone, comprising Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States have resolved to pay the 18 000 naira (about 120 US dollars) monthly minimum wage prescribed by law, to public servants in the states.

The governors made the commitment during a meeting at the Government House Enugu on the condition that the federal government reviews the revenue allocation formula to make more funds available to the states.

Anambra State Governor, and Chairman of the South East Governors’ Forum, Peter Obi told newsmen at the end of the meeting that the governors had decided to work together for the common good of the zone, notwithstanding their political differences.

Appreciation

Obi conveyed the appreciation of the governors to President Goodluck Jonathan for appointing one of their sons, former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim to the position of Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

They congratulated newly elected Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu and Deputy Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha, both of whom hail from the zone.

The governors also wished Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu, regarded as the political father of the zone, a quick recovery from his illness.

The meeting was attended by all the five governors, and political leaders from the zone, including Chief Ralph Nwechue, President General of the Igbo socio-cultural organisation,Ohaneze Ndigbo.
