Government Shifts Resumption Date For Schools Godwin Ukaa, Abuja .
The resumption date for all primary and secondary schools in Nigeria has been shifted from January 7 th to February 4 th 2011.
The Minister of State for Education, Mr. Kenneth Gbagi announced the new date to newsmen on Thursday, saying it was to allow for proper logistics planning for the scheduled voters' registration beginning from 15 th January.
''Government came up with the shift in date because most schools would be used as registration centres by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for update of eligible voters in the forthcoming general election,'' Gbagi said.
He explained that the directive was applicable to both the public and private schools across the country.
The resumption dates set by tertiary institutions stand and the newly announced date will not affect the timetable for examinations by Senior Secondary School students as scheduled by the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, the National Examinations Council, NECO as well as the General Certificate Examination, GCE. INEC plans to commence registration of voters, preparatory to the general election, which starts in April.
