Nigeria's Senate President, David Mark, has appealed to Nigerians to show understanding and restraint and not to be despaired by the postponement of the National Assembly election till Monday.

Mark made the appeal, while reacting to the cancellation of the weekend poll at his residence in Otukpo, Benue state, North Central Nigeria.

Disappointment electorate

The Senator President expressed disappointment as the postponement, by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) left many Nigerians, who came out en mass and eager to vote, disappointed.

Mark described the incident as an anti-climax, but urged all Nigerians to come out on Monday to exercise their franchise.

The Nigerian Senate President while accrediting at the Otukpo ward-one polling said that the citizens expected a lot more efficiency from the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC in what was happening.

Reactions

Kwara state governor, Bukola Saraki has expressed disappointment on the suspension of the National Assembly elections in the state.

The governor said that he was particularly disappointed because the INEC had expressed full readiness for the election.

He therefore appealed to INEC to explain the main reasons for the cancellation so as not to demoralize the electorates who have shown so much enthusiasm for the elections.

Meanwhile, the electorates received the news of the suspension of the elections with grief as most of them had waited for hours without any information from the electoral office.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Timothy Ibitoye had announced earlier that the elections were suspended as a result of shortage of sensitive materials adding that the elections are expected to be held within the next fourteen days.
