Senate begins screening of ministerial nominees

The Nigerian Senate has confirmed the nomination of seven of the Thirty Four ministerial nominees sent to it by President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday.

The seven were ministers in the recently concluded Yar’Adua –Jonathan administration which ended on May 28.

They included the former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison Madueke, Mr. Emeka Wogu, formerly of Labour and Productivity, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu, former Minister of Health and Chief Godsday Orubebe, formerly of the Niger Delta Ministry.

Others were Professor Ruqayyatu Rufai, former Minister of Education, Senator Bala Mohammed, formerly of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT and Mr. Caleb Olubolade, former Minister of State, FCT.

VON Senate Correspondent, Obiora Ani, reports that the Senate also confirmed the appointment of Twenty Special Advisers requested for by President Jonathan.

While responding to questions by the members of the Senate, Diezianni Madueke said that if given an opportunity to serve as a minister, she would ensure the creation of one million jobs in the Oil and Gas sector in the next five years.

She said that the plans were underway for exploration of the Chad Basin for oil in 24 months.

The list of nominees, which was sent to the Senate by the president, does not include the intended portfolios to be occupied.
