Security: Bauchi State safe for business
Uche Iheanacho, Bauchi
The State Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State, Mr Ikechukwu Aduba has reassured investors that Bauchi State is a safe haven for both local and foreign businesses to thrive.
Foreign investors, residents of Bauchi and Nigerians from other parts of the country in the state, were also assured of the safety of their lives, property and investments in the state.
The State Commissioner of Police, Aduba, while speaking on the security situation since the post-election violence that engulfed the state months back, and the recent activities of the ‘Boko Haram’ religious sect, stated that Bauchi State remained the home and mother of all game reserves in the country.
He explained that the security apparatus in the state was on top of the situation, emphasizing that all hope was not lost as being speculated on the pages of some newspapers across the country.
Bad Impression
Mr. Aduba noted with regret, the negative reportage by the Nigerian media, while cautioning them to be more patriotic in the reportage of happenings in the country as the media is an instrument capable of shaping peoples’ opinion on issues that concern them and the society.
On the issue of the religious sect in the country known as ‘Boko Haram’, the police commissioner said that security personnel were working in partnership with local vigilante groups in various communities, other security agencies such as the Civil Defence and Security Corps, the Military and traditional leaders ,to fish out members of this violent sect.
Speaking further on the security of lives and property in Bauchi State, North East Nigeria, the Police Commissioner, stressed that Community Policing should be strongly empowered by governments at all levels, as a means of supporting police intelligence networks and abilities.
Aduba explained that the country had not reached the stage of effective usage of community policing as done in some parts of the world because of some prevailing circumstances, militating against its full use in the nation.
The Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Muhammadu Rilwanu Suleyman Adamu, appealed to both foreign investors and Nigerians to come and explore the beauty of the state, which has one of the best resorts -the Yankari Game Reserve and the home of the first Prime Minister of Nigeria, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.
The Emir also called on the Nigerian media to stop over blowing the situation, pointing out that the media was creating a bad impression.
Bauchi State
Bauchi State is a state in northern Nigeria. Its capital is the city of Bauchi. The state was formed in 1976 when the former North-Eastern State was divided. It originally included the area now in Gombe State, which became a distinct state in 1996.
The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University is located in the capital city Bauchi.
What is now known as Bauchi was until 1976 a province in the then North-Eastern State of Nigeria. According to the 2006 census, the state has a population of 4,653,066.
Bauchi state has gone through tremendous transformation over the years. During the colonial era up to independence, it formed part of the Bauchi-Plateau of the then Northern Region, until the 1967 state creation exercise, when Bauchi, Borno, and Adamawa provinces constituted the former North-Eastern State.
With the creation of Bauchi state in 1976, then comprising present Bauchi and Gombe states, it included 16 Local Government Areas. The number of Local Government Areas in the then Bauchi state was increased to 20 and later to 23.
However, in 1997 when Gombe state was created out of Bauchi and additional local governments were created in the country, Bauchi state was left with 20 Local Government Areas.
