| Right groups and Nigerians call for Obasanjo’s probe
Onyinye Nkwonta,Lagos
Rights groups and some Nigerians have called for the probe of the former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, for the inappropriate sales of Public Enterprises during his tenure.
Prominent among these rights groups and Nigerians are the Civil Rights Movement, the Labour and two legal practitioners, Mr Femi Falana and Sani Hauwa.
Public enquiry
According to Sani Hauwa “if the Minister for FCT, Nasir Al Rufai is being probed for that same issue, why then will the person who is at the helm of affairs Obasanjo be left out.”
He said that if past leaders, who have engaged in dubious activities while in office, are brought to book, it will serve as a deterrent to individuals who think that they are free to abuse their offices.
Sani stated that former President Obasanjo should face public enquiry in order to know the extent of his involvement in all their shady deals and if cleared, he can be left off the hook.
However, he also added that in most cases, public enterprises that were sold were brought over by cronies of the former President who plundered and rendered them prostrate.
Call for legislative summon
For the Civic Rights Movement and Labour, they called for a legislative summon of the former President Olusegun Obasanjo over the allegation of total destruction of the Nigerian Economy.
These groups are also calling for the revocation of legal sales of public properties by the Bureau of Public Enterprises through privatisation since 1999.
To buttress this fact, the Organised Labour also alleged that assets not listed for privatisation were also sold to multinationals within and outside the country.
They equally pointed out that most of the companies were grossly undervalued.
