Northern Nigeria groups condemn post-election violence
Three northern groups, the Arewa Citizens Action for Change (ACAC), the Arewa Youth Development Foundation (AYDF) and the Arewa Students Forum (ASF), have condemned the recent post-election violence in some parts of the North.
The groups in a statement issued at the end of their meeting in Kano, Northern Nigeria, on Tuesday, describing the incident as “barbaric.”
They noted that the mayhem was largely perpetrated by youths and stated that it portrayed the North in bad light.
“In this era of political transformation on the African continent, such uncivilised approach to political disagreement is uncalled for, more so when it came from the youth,'' the groups said.
The groups also condemned what they called “inciting utterances” in some quarters, saying such utterances could aggravate the crisis.
Condolence
The group in the statement signed by the Vice-President of ACAC (North-East), Abdullahi Toro; the National President of the AYDF, Abubakar Kurawa, and the National Secretary of the ASF, Alfred Solomon, condoled with the families of those affected by the violence.
“We condole with the families of those who lost their lives during the mayhem, including the youth corps members who died in active national service,'' the groups said.
Peaceful co-existence
The groups called on the traditional rulers, religious leaders as well as tribal associations to ensure peaceful co-existence among Nigerians irrespective of ethnic or religious differences.
On their part, the associations undertook to educate youths in the region on the importance of peace to the corporate existence of Nigeria.
