Nigerian government proposes new national carrier
By Salamatu Okorejior
The Nigerian Government is to establish a new national airline in 2012.
This is happening nine years after the liquidation of the former national carrier, Nigerian Airways. The proposed airline will not be entirely state-owned.
The Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah, briefing reporters in Abuja said: “We’re working on a national carrier that will be publicly owned with limited financial contribution by the government. Government will act as a regulator and provide an enabling environment for this objective to be realised.”
She did not say how the fund would be sourced.
This initiative will serve a purpose of boosting Nigeria’s identity as well as providing Nigeria the chance to be a part of the core in air transport.
