Nigerian government plans toll gates re-introduction
Obiora Ani, Abuja
The Nigerian government says it will re-introduce toll gates in the major highways across the country from next year.
Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Mr Mike Onolememen, gave the indication at a maiden interactive session with the Senate Committee on Work at the National Assembly, Abuja.
He said the toll scheme would facilitate the rehabilitation, maintenance and construction of new roads in Nigeria.
The Minister added that the government would link the six geo-political zones in the country and major markets with dual carriage ways to ease the movement of goods and services to various parts of the country.
The toll gate scheme was cancelled in 2004 by former President Olusegun Obasanjo due to alleged misappropriation of funds generated from the toll scheme.
