Nigerian first lady commits to citizens health care
Gloria Essien, Abuja
The Nigerian first lady, Mrs Patience Jonathan, has reaffirmed her commitment to the well being of the less privileged women and children in the country.
She stated this at the National Hospital Abuja after visiting a child baby Chimeka Opara, recovering from heart surgery, financed by her Non Governmental Organisation, the “A-Aruera Reachout Foundation”.
Mrs Jonathan noted that she has the passion for the less priviledge and would continue to cater for them.
Medical collaboration
She said that the collaboration of her NGO and the National Hospital Abuja has been yielding results such as baby Opara's surgery.
The president's wife equally thanked Dr Yahaya Adumu and his team for successfully carrying out the surgery.
Mrs Jonathan noted that the collaboration between A-Aruera Reachout Foundation and the National hospital had led to the treatment of children by the doctors while others, with serious health issues were sent abroad for treatment.
The patient’s mother, Mrs. Esther Opara, said she was happy that a child that was originally scheduled to travel to India for the surgery was successfully operated on in Nigeria.
The surgeon, Dr. Yahaya Adamu said that the operation which lasted for about fifty minutes was not the first they have done.
He said that the hospital has the human and material resources for such surgeries and appealled to the citizenry to stop flying abroad for ailments that could be treated locally.
The baby, Miss Chimeka Opara is recovering from the surgery and would be discharged soon.
