Nigerian Senate may revisit issue of resource control –Ayogu Eze
Obiora Ani, Abuja
The Nigerian Senate may revisit the issue of resource control in Nigeria and may enact a law that will make it mandatory for allocations to states to be based on their contributions to the national treasury.
The indication emerged on Monday when Senator Ayogu Eze addressed Senate Correspondents at the National Assembly, Abuja on the viability of states and the need to create more states in the country.
Senator Eze said the problem of Nigeria was not about the number of states but their viability and contributions to the national coffer.
“The problem with Nigeria is not the number of states. The problem with Nigeria is the absence of rule of law, absence of due process, absence of accountability, and absence of the prudential utilization of the commonwealth of this country”, the Senator said.
Untapped resources
Senator Eze who is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works said the states in Nigeria were endowed with human and natural resources that would generate enormous resources if harnessed by the states.
The Senator said some lawmakers were working underground to ensure the devolution of powers to give the states and regions more powers and effective control of their resources.
