The Nigerian Senate has concluded debate on one of the pre-colonial laws, the Nigeria Police Act which came into effect in 1943.

The bill, which is for an Act to repeal the Police Act and Re-enact the Nigeria Police Service, will remove the colonial influences on the Police and introduce international best practices.

Leading the debate, Senator Victor Ndoma Egba, said the bill was aimed at establishing a people-oriented Police Service. He said that it was a crucial step to reforming the Nigeria Police.

Senators who contributed to the debate argued that the bill had several provisions that would help to check the excesses of the Police, create a code of conduct for them and enable the public report cases of abuse committed by their personnel.

The bill was referred to the Senate committees on Police Affairs as well as Judiciary
and Human Rights for final legislative action before its passage.
