Nigerian Senate, Labour Unions' talk deadlocked
Obiora Ani, Lagos
The Nigerian Senate has for the second consecutive night failed to persuade the joint labour unions in the country to stop the nationwide strike which started on Monday.
After an expanded dialogue brokered by the Senate Leadership in Abuja on Tuesday night, the joint labour leadership insisted that they would only negotiate with government representatives when the price of the premium motor spirit is reverted to 65 Naira per litre.
The Nigeria Labour Congress President, Alhaji Abdulwaheed Umar, who led the joint Labour Unions said although they had made progress, they had not gotten to the promised land.
He said that they were however hopeful that government would do what was required of it.
The Secretary to the Nigerian government, Chief Anyim Pius Anyim, who led the government delegation, said discussions were very fruitful.
The expanded meeting included the leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress, the Trade Union Congress, Secretary to the government as well as the Minister of Labour and the Senate President, David Mark and the Senate leadership.
