Nigerian Railway Corporation tasked on operations
Chinedu Ihiaka,Lagos
The Nigerian railway corporation has been challenged to step up its operations to ease the pressure on road transportation and cushion the effect of the recent increase in fuel price on Nigerians.
The Nigerian House of Representatives committee chairman on land transport, Musa Ada gave this challenge during a familiarization tour at the corporation’s headquarters in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial centre.
While addressing the management of Nigeria Railway Corporation, Musa Ada assured them of legislative backing for it to perform it duties effectively.
The Committee chairman however, called for effective and judicious use of the funds as captured in the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme SURE.
Commendation
Commending the House Committee for the timely intervention, the Managing Director of Nigerian Railway Corporation, Adeseyi Sijuwade said the corporation has increased its fleet and will soon take delivery of more passenger coaches in response to the increase in patronage.
Sijuwade said that the rehabilitation of Lagos to Kano rail track when completed will cushion the impact of the recent increase in price of petrol and boost trade and economic activities.
