Nigeria urged to protect its forest

An environmental scientist, Mrs Bola Odunsi has described forests as indispensable to human lives.

She stated this at the United Nation Commemoration of World Environmental Day in Lagos, South West Nigeria.
                                                                            
The scientist said, Nigeria forest reserve worth about 10 Million hectares about 20 to 30 years ago, this represent about ten percent of total land area but, unfortunately in the last twenty years this have been reduced to five percent fallen short of the twenty five percent recommendation.

Impact of deforestation

She explained that deforestation of land at an alarming rate had led to bio-diversity of typical ecological site.

The Environmental Scientist informed that the recent natural disasters in Asia, America and other part of the world signals that nature was fighting back.

She urged government and private organizations to partner and imbibe the culture of tree planting and to make a fundamental change in the way forest are managed.

The environmental scientist also urged the United Nation Humanitarian Programme to create awareness to stimulate the political class and the government of the world on the need to pay more attention to the environment for sustenance of life.
