The Nigerian government has directed its Works Ministry to undertake a comprehensive assessment and maintenance repairs of all bridges across the country.

This is part of the decisions reached at the Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja on Wednesday.

The Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku, told reporters that the decision was part of government’s effort to imbibe maintenance as a routine exercise on all projects.

Mr Maku said the council also directed that budgetary allocation would be made every year for maintenance, to protect all government projects.

The Council also approved about 1.1 billion Naira for the repairs of Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, South Western Nigeria.

The repairs which include replacement of eight extra joints on the bridge, is expected to be completed within nine months.
