Nigeria refutes media reports on Gaddafi's son
The Nigerian government has urged Nigerians and the international community to discountenance media reports alleging that one of Muammar Gaddafi’s sons, Mr Saadi Gaddafi, was residing somewhere in Nigeria.
The Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku, made the call in Abuja on Tuesday.
He noted that security checks showed that the reports were false.
He said such reports were capable of causing confusion in the polity.
Maku affirmed that there was no evidence to suggest that Gaddafi’s son was residing or issuing statements from anywhere in Nigeria.
“The position of the Nigerian government on Libya is unambiguous. It is therefore misleading for the media to speculate that Saadi Gaddafi is taking refuge in Nigeria,” Maku stressed.
The Minister urged the media to always cross check their facts before going public with such sensitive reports, saying that they could have negative diplomatic and security implications.
