Nigeria postal services launch special postage stamps

Nigeria’s Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), in conjunction with the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), has launched three special postage stamps explaining that the initiative will go a long way to create awareness on tax payment among the citizenry.
The postage stamps launched will be sold to the public at N20, N50 and N100 respectively.
Speaking at the event which was held in Abuja, the Minister of State for Finance, Dr.Yerima Lawal Ngama, said that the introduction of the postage stamps is part of the initiative of utilising any available medium to spread the message of taxation.
Model taxpayers
He also said that government recently realised the need to improve other sources of revenue besides revenue accruing to government coffers from petroleum resources.
Ngama further said that the launch of the stamp is part of the recent reform of the tax system by government.
He urged citizens to comply with all the tax laws and be model taxpayers.
Also speaking, the Minister of Communications and Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson who was represented by the Postmaster General of NIPOST, Malam Ibrahim Mori Baba, said that the new postage stamps will be sold in all the post offices in the country.
Tax advocacy
She said the plan to sell the stamps in London, United Kingdom and in New York, United States of America for a period of six months is intended to boost revenue for government.
Earlier, the Executive Chairman of FIRS, Mrs. Ifueke Omoigui Okauru disclosed that the idea of introducing the stamps to convey tax messages for the enlightment of the taxpaying public was conceived in 2009 by officials of the agency.
According to her, the objectives of the initiatives include the promotion of tax advocacy, general enlightment on tax matters and the benefits of paying taxes
