Nigeria introduces performance based navigation system
The Nigerian government has endorsed the implementation of Performance Based Navigation (PBN) system that would enable the country move from terrestrial to satellite-based navigation.
The move is to enhance safety as well as tackle challenges of flight delays and cancellation.
The PBN system or technology integrates satellite-based navigation with advanced aircraft system capabilities and other technological advancements to create a simpler and better way to manage air traffic.
Elimination of flight delays
The Director General of the Nigeria Civil Avaition Authority (NCAA), Dr. Harold Demuren, said the transition from terrestrial navigation to satellite had invaluable benefits including enhanced safety, fuel economy, elimination of flight delay, cancellation and numerous others.
He said that the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) endorsed the implementation in its Assembly's Resolution 36/23 of 2007 for all member states.
The actual implementation process for Nigeria as outlined in the roadmap to PBN is divided into 10 steps and the implementation timetable divided into three categories: Near term, Medium term and long term.
The Near term started from 2010-2012; and the Medium term commences from 2013-2016; and the Long term plan will run from 2017-2025.
