Nigeria's document on global warming ready in December

A member of the drafting committee of the Second National Communication Project in Nigeria, Prof. Emmanuel Oladipo says the country's document on global warming is to be ready next month.

The Document

The document, which he said, had reached 90 per cent completion stage, would articulate the country's plans in reducing carbon emission in line with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

It would also be used to attract funding on global warming and other environmental projects in the country from the Global Environmental Facility (GEF).

Speaking to newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja, the nation’s capital, Oladipo said that the document contained information on emission removal, the status of the country on mitigation and adaptation to reduce global warming.

He said, “It is a mandatory requirement by the UNFCCC, any country that has signed, endorsed or assented to the convention is expected to prepare national communication document.”

Expectation

According to Oladipo “What are expected in the national communication document are how vulnerable is our country, the various steps we have taken in the past and the steps we are taking now.”

He said, “The step we are taking in the future must be clearly explained in the National Communication Document to combat climate change.”

Reports also say that the document, prepared every four years enables the UN body to assess a country's readiness in addressing issues with regard to green house gas emissions.

Nigeria submitted the First National Communication Document to the UNFCCC in Bonn, Germany in November 2003.
