UK Institute Partners Nigeria On Occupational Safety

The International Institute of Risk and Safety Management is to partner with the Nigerian Institute of Safety Professionals to achieve occupational health safety.

The institute's regional coordinator, Mr. Eugene Itua said that the partnership would promote professional standards in accident prevention and occupational health in Nigeria .

“Many organisations in Nigeria do not see the need to ensure the health safety of their employees and this trend must be reversed in line with international safety standards.'' Itua said.

He said both institutes would, therefore, build a result-oriented synergy expected to promote research into accident prevention and occupational health safety.

Itua said that the non-implementation of occupational health safety standards was due to the absence of adequate enforcement mechanism.

He recalled that many people have been injured while several lives have been lost due to incidences associated with workplace hazards.

Itua said that the United Kingdom-based institute would create strategic partnership with its Nigerian counterpart to enhance organisations' commitment to employees' workplace safety culture.

“With such partnership, organisations and individuals would be encouraged to adopt health and safety best practices for their overall workforce, '' he said.

Itua said plans were on to create awareness across the country among organisations, communities and individuals on the importance of heath safety.
