‘Nigeria’s Foreign Policy will be driven by economic development’ - Ashiru

 

The Nigerian government has said that its foreign policy thrust would be economic diplomacy.

Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru stated this at his maiden World Press Conference in Lagos, South West Nigeria.

Ashiru told reporters that with Nigeria’s investment, both in human and material resources, to the stability of Liberia and Sierra Leone, the private sector would be able to take a leading role in tapping investment opportunities in both countries.

According to him, for any official visits outside the country, selected members of the Organised Private Sector will accompany government delegation to discuss investment potentials in Nigeria.

The new Foreign Affairs Minister said all Nigerian embassies had been instructed to ensure that investment opportunities across the world are channelled to the country.

The Foreign Affairs Minister also stated that the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs would be used as a think tank to advice Nigeria in its foreign policy initiative through its their research effort.

The Head of Public affairs, Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Mr Alex Okeanyanwu expressed optimism that the Foreign Affairs Minister would deliver on his promises as an astute diplomat.
