Nigeria, Cameroon in bilateral air service agreement

The Executive Council in Nigeria has approved the signing and ratification of the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA)  between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the government of the Republic of Cameroon.

This approval was given at the executive council meeting in Abuja on Wednesday.

The agreement

The agreement is to achieve among other things, increase in the air traffic operations between the two countries as well as stimulating enhanced Economic, political and social activities.

Addressing journalists after the meeting, the Minister of Information and Communications Mr. Labaran Maku  stated that the council has directed the Ministry of Justice to prepare the instrument of ratification and forward to the  National Assembly.

According to him, the Federal Government of Nigeria and that of Cameroon are parties to the Chicago Convention of the International Civil Aviation Organisation, which were signed by contracting states in 1944 on strengthening bilateral relations through air transportation services.

UN key appointment

Maku also said that the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development notified the Council on the appointment of a Nigerian, Professor Joy Ogwu, as the first President of the Executive Board of the newly- created United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women.

On this strength the Council approved that Nigeria makes a voluntary contribution of 500,000 dollars to the new UN entity called ‘UN Women’ through the Ministry of Finance.
