Mobile operators tasked on meeting performance indicators
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has urged three major mobile operators, MTN, Globacom and Airtel, to meet the key performance indicators set by the Commission to improve quality of service or risk prevention from further sale of SIM Cards by the end of November 2011.
The deadline which is to last thirty days shall take effect from November 1, 2011
This deadline follows an observation of dismal performance by the three operators on quality of service from the result of an independent monitoring exercise carried out by the Commission across the country. The exercise showed that all the three operators failed to meet with four key performance indicators that were crucial for quality of service improvements as set by the Commission.
Penalties
“Any new SIM card sold, or additional subscriber added to the network in contravention of the direction, will attract a penalty of One Million Naira per subscriber,” the commission stated.
The commission explained that any contravention of the directive whenever it becomes operative would attract a penalty of Five Million Naira, and an additional 500 thousand Naira per day, as such contravention persists.
In addition to the above, NCC noted that failure to meet the quality of service targets from November 30, 2011 by any of the operators would attract a fine of 500 thousand Naira for every month of failure.
In a warning to the Operators, the Commission said it was not in doubt that the customer experience on the services provided by the Mobile operators have been far from satisfactory, especially as the Commission had been receiving complaints from various subscribers. It warned that thetrend of unacceptable quality of service had persisted for too long.
