Qasim Akinreti, Lagos

The Lagos state government in southwest Nigeria has marked the 2010 UN community day with a grant of over 20 million Naira grant-in-aid to 50 communities.

The communities were awarded between 400,000 naira and 250,000 Naira each to support completion of various community based projects, for the sustainable development of the rural areas.

Lagos state governor, Babatunde Fasola, who gave out the grants urged the communities to ensure that security of lives and property were given priority, to attract more investments to the localities.

He commended the efforts of the local security agency, the Neighbourhood Watch, for assisting the police to curb crimes in the rural areas and across Lagos state.

Governor Fasola used the opportunity to advise the rural communities' dwellers register for and participate actively during the 2011 elections.

This is line with the theme of the year's celebration tagged: Achieving Credible Election through Effective Community Mobilisation.

Three outstanding communities won a new 18 -seater bus, a tricycle and a motorcycle.

Over 70 communities across the state participated in the colourful ceremony to mark the day.

The UN sets aside the 18 th November every year for the Community Day.
