Governor Fashola to commission 10 megawatt power project

A 10 megawatts Island Power Project (IPP) newly built as part of proactive efforts to boost economic and social activities within the Lagos Island region of Lagos state, Nigeria’s commercial nerve, will be commissioned on Wednesday by the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN).

The Lagos State government in a statement said stated that the Island Power Project was another milestone by the Fashola administration and an expression of the administration’s unalloyed commitment towards addressing the energy needs of the people of the State.

The statement further explained that the new IPP, built to highest global thermal operating plant standards, will deliver 24 hours uninterrupted supply of electricity to some public institutions located in central Lagos such as the Island maternity, Lagos General Hospital, and the Lagos High Court in a bid to increase their efficiency and bring down their operational cost.

Bringing back night life

It added that the plant which will also power street light infrastructure on no fewer than 20 streets on the Lagos Island will further energise night economy in the state and enhance security.
 
“It is quite reassuring that this project will enhance the capability of the Island Maternity and Lagos General Hospital to save more lives in critical emergency situations as the hospital will from now be served with uninterrupted power supply.” the release added.

According to project reports from the State's Power Delivery Team, the feasibility of 24-hour power supply was a feat that will be made possible with the deployment of dedicated underground distribution network that makes the system operate with maximum efficiency.

The State government stressed that the immediate, short and long term benefits of the IPP were multi-dimensional saying, “it will definitely increase the tempo of industrialisation and enhance general improvement in income and living conditions of the residents on the island.”

The Lagos State Government is certain that the impact of the additional 10MW of electricity being supplied to the State, will definitely translate to more economic empowerment for a greater number of Nigerians whose means of livelihood largely depend on stable power supply”.

The State government is monitoring and ready to collaborate with the Federal Government when the privatization process occasioned by the Power Sector reform is completed.

It would be recalled that the state government has commissioned the first local transformer manufacturing plant along the Badagry corridor built in partnership with an Egyptian firm, Elsewedy Electrical Nigeria.

The state is also undertaking the first state wide energy audit programme which will establish the power usage of the people of the State.
