Jonathan gets UN, AU and ECOWAS commendation
The United Nations, African Union and ECOWAS have commended Nigeria’s President and outgoing Chairman of ECOWAS for the exemplary leadership of the regional bloc in the past year.
The international bodies gave the commendation at the opening of the 39th Ordinary Summit of the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government in Abuja.
Jonathan’s chairmanship of ECOWAS was specifically commended for the successes recorded in consolidating democratic gains and preventing violence in the region.
According to the respective international bodies, ECOWAS under Jonathan was able to restore peace and stability in Guinea Bissau, and also reinstated democracy in Guinea Conakry and constitutional legality in Niger Republic.
Commendations
In his statement to the Summit, Mr.Said Djinit, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in West Africa, commended the collaboration that had prevailed between his organisation and ECOWAS in resolving crisis in the sub-region.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the UN to continue to support the efforts of ECOWAS countries in strengthening governance institutions and promoting democracy.
The Chairperson of the AU Commission, Mr Jean Ping, who was represented at the event commended Jonathan for a successful tenure.
Ping said AU and ECOWAS had worked in tandem supporting each other for the good of African continent, particularly the Ivorian crisis.
The President of ECOWAS Commission, Mr Victor Gbeho, said through wise guidance, the regional economic bloc has developed into a leader and most respected organization in the continent and beyond.
