Jonathan hopes for the best as election results trickle in

Nigeria’s President, Goodluck Jonathan, has said he hopes for the best as he returned to Abuja from Otuoke, Bayela, where he had gone to cast his vote in Saturday’s Presidential election.

The President said he hinged the assertion on reports he has been receiving on the poll so far.

Political evolution

Speaking after casting his vote in Otuoke on Saturday, President Jonathan described the election as a “new dawn in political evolution of the country.”

The President commended Nigerians across class and age barriers for exercising their rights from the registration period.

“I am indeed happy that we are consolidating democracy that must be built on the power of the ballot paper,” he said.

Election credibility

Jonathan restated his neutrality in the electoral process, insisting that he had not in any way influenced the process by interfering with the work of INEC.

The President also said that he would concede defeat if he lost, noting that he would save Nigeria from the type of crisis in Cote d’Ivoire.

In his words;”the Ivorian situation will never happen in Nigeria as the beauty of democracy is to respect the wishes of the electorate."
