The Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan has arrived Malabo, capital of Equatorial  Guinea to attend the 17th ordinary session of the Assembly of the African Union.

Jonathan, who was accompanied by his wife, Mrs Patience Jonathan and some of his senior aides, was received at Malabo International Airport by the country's Prime Minister, Ignacio Milam Tang, AU officials and Nigerian Embassy staff led by the Nigerian Ambassador to the country, Dr Greg Okon.

The President, who has since  joined  other  African Heads  of state  at the Malabo International Conference Centre  for other engagements of the AU summit, which has its theme as ‘Accelerating Youth Empowerment for Sustainable Development,’ will  later in the day, meet with the Nigerian community resident in the country.

Empowering youths

Meanwhile the President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Mr Ajani James who represented the Nigerian youths at the summit said that African leaders must see youth development as a key agenda in governance.

Speaking with Voice of Nigeria shortly after President Jonathan’s arrival, Mr Ajani stated that youths development could be accelerated and sustained in Africa if the African leaders remained committed to the attainment of the goal.

He said that one sure way of empowering the youths, particularly in Nigeria was for government to aspire to reduce unemployment by creating avenue for the youths to start their own business.

He said: “There are a lot of young people who have ideas. Our human capital development is very poor in Nigeria. We are not just giving access to young people to do things on their own. In fact, they don’t have opportunity in governance, they don’t have opportunity in business, and they don’t have opportunity in society development. Government needs to create avenue for them to start their own business and if they start their own business, they could employ two other persons. Then, we are reducing this menace of unemployment.”
