International observers to monitor Lagos Local council elections

A team of international observers has been accredited to monitor the Local government Council election to be held on Saturday Lagos State, South-west Nigeria.

The chairman of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), Justice Abdul Fatai Adeyinka, told reporters that the commission had received request from some foreign missions, civil society groups and local observer and had equally accredited them to observe the election.

Justice Adeyinka said that elections would hold for councillors and chairmanship posts in 20 Local Government and 37 Local Council Development Areas.

According to him, about 20,000 ad-hoc staff had been recruited for the election.

At least 10 political parties have fielded candidates for the various positions.

Towards a successful election

Most notable parties like the Peoples Democratic Party and the Action Congress of Nigeria have embarked on last minutes campaign to woo electorates before Thursday deadline placed by LASIEC.

Justice Adeyinka said that all necessary materials and logistics for the successful conduct of the polls have been put in place.

The LASIEC chairman called on candidates, parties and the voters to conduct themselves in good manners so as to have a hitch free election

About six million people in the State have been registered for the polls.
