Nigeria's electoral body hosts African counterparts

 

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Nigeria will on Monday, January 23, 2012, convene an international conference of knowledge-sharing among African election management bodies (EMBs).

The Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Mr Kayode Idowu said in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, that the conference would be held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.

Participants

Expected participants at the conference are, the chairpersons/presidents of the EMBs of 26 African countries, including Nigeria. The countries are: Algeria, Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Chad, DR Congo, Egypt, Gabon and The Gambia. Others are: Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Mali, Morocco, Niger, Sierra Leone, Senegal, South Africa, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Objective

The principal objective of the conference is to provide a platform for sharing knowledge of best practices and insights into the organisation and conduct of elections, and drawing on the experiences of EMBs in the region and around the world.

Themes

The themes at the conference include: planning, conduct and security of electoral operations under conditions of transition; and operational plans, deployment, voters registration and education, training and security.
