INEC to release results within 48 hours
INEC Chairman Attahiru Jega has said that the results of the general elections would be announced 48 hours after voting.
Jega announced this on Friday, in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, during a national broadcast on the eve of the National Assembly elections.
Ensuring competence
He said that the commission had prepared adequately in terms of logistics and training of staff for the exercise.
“This is the target timeline we are working on in spite of the fact that Nigeria is a very vast country with many difficult terrains,’’ Jega said.
He said that 400,000 personnel would be engaged to conduct the elections. This, he said, will ensure that an average of three officials would be in charge of each polling unit.
Jega disclosed plans to deploy electronic surveillance technology to monitor activities in strategic areas.
He stated that the commission would mitigate factors that could prevent Nigerians from exercising their constitutionally guaranteed right to vote.
The INEC chairman urged all Nigerians, voters, candidates and INEC officials, to do their part in ensuring the success of the process.
Dedicated lines
He said that voters could use the Short Messaging Services (SMS) lines 08166662222 and telephone hotlines 07027367819 available for them to report election irregularities.
