I will not inflict suffering on Nigerians – Jonathan
Gloria Essien, Abuja
Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has asked the citizens not to be afraid of the unknown effects of the fuel subsidy removal.
He was speaking at the Presidential Villa 2011 Christmas Carol Service held in Abuja.
Temporary effect
The president said that the measure was necessary for the growth of the economy as the country could not afford to continue borrowing money to subsidize fuel, while a few people benefit from it.
He also noted that the effect of the subsidy removal would be temporary but at the long run, Nigerians would be the better for it.
"Jonathan can never be the one to inflict suffering on the citizens but measures must be taken to be taken to better the country" the president said.
The Christmas Carol Service featured different Christmas carols from both local and international choirs and Bible lessons with special Christmas song by the former president of Zambia, Mr Kenneth Kaunda and the Ugandan Children's Choir.
The first lesson of the service taken from Genesis 3:1-15 was read by the Nigerian first lady, Mrs Patience Jonathan.
The special Christmas message delivered by Rt. Revd. Oluranti Odubogun, focused on "Love and Faithfulness”.
The high point of the occasion was a special Christmas dance steps by President Goodluck Jonathan, former Nigerian head of state, Gen. Yakubu Gowon and former Zambian president Kenneth Kaunda.
