Uche Aneke, Abuja
The leader of Nigerian delegation to the 2010 Muslim pilgrimage and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Mohammed Sa’ad Abubakar, has acknowledged the support of the Nigerian president for the successful hajj operation last year.
Sultan Abubakar express this appreciation of Nigerian Muslims while presenting the 2010 Amirul-Hajj/Federal Government Delegation Report to President Jonathan at State House, Abuja.
He specifically noted the President’s support in the areas of concessionary exchange rate and the sixty five percent waiver on all aviation charges payable by Hajj air carriers to relevant government agencies.
According to him, all these support culminated in the successful airlift of Muslim pilgrims to and from Saudi Arabia on schedule.
President Jonathan said that the Federal Government institutionalised the Amirul-Hajj in order to ensure that Muslems perform the Hajj without any pains or problems.
He said that the success recorded in the 2010 hajj exercise after thorough digest of the report would help to regulate and improve the 2011 exercise.
President Jonathan used the occasion to call on religious leaders to pray for the success of the elections as well as a departure from all forms of divisive politics.
