Mark Expresses Grief Over Port Harcourt Stampede

Nigerian Senate President, David Mark, has expressed grief over the death of supporters during Saturday's stampede at the PDP presidential rally in Port-Harcourt, Rivers, in which more that ten people were killed.

In a statement, Mr. Mark sympathised with President Goodluck Jonathan, the government and people of Rivers state and the bereaved families.

“We are resolutely committed to free, fair and acceptable elections in April. We must not deviate from this path. That is the only way we can immortalise the death of our party members, so that their death would not be in vain,” Mark said in the statement.

He appreciated the overwhelming support from the length and breadth of Nigeria , calling for decorum and discipline during rallies in order to avoid a recurrence of the Port-Harcourt saga.

The senate president tasked security operatives, especially the police, to investigate the cause of the stampede in order to improve upon crowd management and control.

He asked Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers to set machinery in motion with a view to identifying the victims in order to compensate the bereaved families.
